Maths sheet

Counting objects to 10

Draft: not yet checked by a teacher

They're learning to say one number for each object, and that the last number they say tells you how many there are.

How they're taught to do it

  1. Touch or move each object as they count it.
  2. Say one number for each object, no more and no less.
  3. The last number they say is how many there are.
  4. Move the objects around and count again. It's still the same amount.

Worked example

* * * * *
* * *

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
There are 8.

AvoidCounting faster than touching. Slow it down so every object gets exactly one number.

Our five senses

Draft: not yet checked by a teacher

We find out about the world using five senses, and each sense uses a different part of the body.

  • Sight: eyes
  • Hearing: ears
  • Smell: nose
  • Taste: tongue
  • Touch: skin
Helping with the writing

Year 1 sentences need a capital letter, finger spaces and a full stop. For example: "I use my nose to smell flowers."

AvoidThe "tongue map" (sweet at the tip, bitter at the back). It's a myth: all of the tongue can taste every flavour.
