The part-whole model

Draft: not yet checked by a teacher

They're learning that a number can be split into parts. 7 can be 4 and 3, or 5 and 2, and it's still 7.

How they're taught to do it

  1. The whole goes in the big circle, the parts go in the smaller circles.
  2. Use real objects first: split 7 counters into two groups.
  3. Then write it as a number sentence: 4 + 3 = 7.

Worked example

      ( 7 )
     / \
  ( 4 ) ( 3 )

4 + 3 = 7

AvoidJumping straight to written sums. Let them split real objects first so the idea sticks.

Our five senses

Draft: not yet checked by a teacher

We find out about the world using five senses, and each sense uses a different part of the body.

  • Sight: eyes
  • Hearing: ears
  • Smell: nose
  • Taste: tongue
  • Touch: skin
Helping with the writing

Year 1 sentences need a capital letter, finger spaces and a full stop. For example: "I use my nose to smell flowers."

AvoidThe "tongue map" (sweet at the tip, bitter at the back). It's a myth: all of the tongue can taste every flavour.
